Effects of Workplace Discrimination on Employees

Although U.S. employers are prohibited from discriminating against workers for their race, national origin, religion, age, disability or other protected class, it still happens to this day. All employees deserve to go into a work environment where they feel safe and respected. Unfortunately, if they’re experiencing discrimination, it can be difficult for them to go into work every day.

Here are some of the effects of workplace discrimination on employees.

Taking Many Days Off Work

When employees are facing discrimination on a daily basis at work, they may decide to take more sick and personal days to get away from it all. Unfortunately, taking too many days off work in a short period can cause employees to fall behind in their projects. They may feel an immense amount of stress to finish their work by the deadline.

Losing Sleep

If an employee is dealing with discrimination at work, he or she likely thinks about it all the time, including at night. With the discrimination on top of an employee’s mind, he or she may even struggle to fall and stay asleep. As a result, the employee may wake up tired and groggy. When the employee gets to work, he or she may have trouble focusing on various tasks.

Dealing with Emotional Problems

It is not uncommon for victims of workplace discrimination to deal with emotional problems, such as anxiety and depression. They may have an immense amount of anxiety before they come into work each day and may even have to take prescription medication for it. These employees may also become depressed and wonder why they are being treated this way. They may even start to believe that there must be something wrong with them.

Feeling Physically Ill

Employees who are discriminated against at work may suffer from stress. Eventually, too much stress can take a toll on the body. Physical symptoms of stress include headaches, stomach pain, fatigue, rapid heartbeat and dry mouth.
